Fire district reestablishing auxiliary

The Steelville Fire Protection District will soon receive some much-needed support in the form of the reestablishment of an auxiliary. The organization is open to anyone who’d like to be involved and the first meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, Feb. 9 at 6 p.m. at the SFPD, House 1 (in Steelville). The SFPD Auxiliary will function to care for the fire department and to provide aid to victims of serious fires.

The auxiliary was formed by Wendy Keen, wife of Assistant Fire Chief Michael “Tiny” Keen. She researched how to set up the organization with other fire departments and then went to local firefighters and wives to do so. “This will show the community’s appreciation for the firefighters and will also function as a way to get the community together,” she said.

She also emphasized the difference in the new organization over the one in place many years ago, “This is not a women’s auxiliary; it is open to anyone 12 years of age and over.”

To support the fire district, the auxiliary plans to sponsor fundraisers to raise money for equipment, gear and other needed items, to hold an annual fireman’s picnic and to supply drinking water for firefighters on scene when requested by the incident commander.

The auxiliary will also help those who suffer loss due to fire. By-laws for the organization state that help will be given to “victims whose home, personal property and life essentials, such as food and clothing, have been destroyed or extensively damaged so as to interrupt the normal way of life of the victim(s).” Wendy explained, “We will step in and help where Red Cross won’t or to supplement Red Cross.”

The formation of the auxiliary was approved by the SFPD at their November meeting, along with the officers for the group who are the volunteers who started the organization—all wives or firefighters. President is Wendy Keen, Vice-president, Denyal Lefler; Secretary, Tenise Martin; and Historian/Treasurer, Christy Hemby.

For more information on how to get involved, contact Wendy Keen at keenwendy@hotmail.com or (573) 205-4470.

Help was there at Christmas

This is a note of thanks to the Steelville Volunteer Fire Department.

My wife and I moved to the Steelville area about six years ago. Christmas morning we were on our way to my in-laws. We made it to Highway 8 to find it a sheet of ice. We stopped and put chains on the truck and were able to turn around without help.

Help was there, however, for those who needed it in the form of our volunteer firemen.

I don’t know about you, but it seems pretty amazing to me. Here it is Christmas morning and these good people volunteer their time, personal vehicles and gas because their community needs help. That, my friends and neighbors is real Christmas Spirit.

God bless and a safe and Happy New Year.
